Q:

I am new to the Alpaca Business and I will be shearing them soon. I don't know how to go about finding someone good to shear them. Do you know of anyone? I don't know anything about processing the fiber. What are the steps I need to go through to submit my fiber to get processed?

A:
ALPACANATION.COM has a great listing of shearers located all over the country.

Just about every shearer will separate the fiber per animal into 1st, 2nd, & 3rd cuts. I recommend using clear / opaque plastic bags so you can see the fiber color without opening each bag. Also, use a 3x5 note card to put inside the bag indicating animal name & cut.

Pre-preparing the fiber is not necessary. If the animal has a huge amount of hay, sand, burrs etc... try and (gently) knock it off the animal before shearing. Once the fiber is bagged you can pack into a cardboard box and ship it to us whichever service is most easy for you (UPS, FedEx, USPS)!

Q:

How do you charge for processing my fiber?

A:
Pioneer Fiber Mill charges you for "out-weight" or "finished product weight". We document intake weight as a reference prior to processing. Once your yarn is a skein or on a cone it is weighed and your pay $32.00 per pound (exotics vary). Additional per pound charges for excessive skirting, extremely soiled fiber, and wool will apply.

Roving & Batting are billed at $18.00 per pound. Rug-Yarn & Core-Spun Yarn utilizes all remaining surplus fiber. It is billed at $ 30.00 per pound. You can also get your surplus back as loose clean fiber at $ 18.00 per pound.

Realistic processing loss weights can range from 10% to 50% from intake weight, this is another reason we bill on "out-weight" or "finished product weight".  It is fair business practice.

Q:

Do you dye fiber & how much do you charge?

A:

WE DO! Our Artisan Dye Lots are a maximum of 5 pounds of fiber. Each color batch will vary, so that is why we limit the runs to 5 pounds. Custom blended colors are available. We do ask for a realistic color variance as the fiber characteristics change the final outcome. The 5 pound Dye Lots are $ 35.00 each.
